What are My Options for Tooth Replacement?

What Are My Tooth Replacement Options?

When you are missing teeth it can significantly alter the function of your mouth and the look of your face and jaw. Many people have one or more missing teeth due to trauma, decay or gum disease. These teeth should be replaced as soon as possible to avoid any further damage to the facial structure. Many of our patients wonder what their options are for tooth replacement, so we figured we would share.

You basically have three options to replace missing teeth. The first is a dental implant. A dental implant is an artificial tooth attached to a screw that is fastened into your jaw. This is the most ideal option for tooth replacement if you are a good candidate. The second option is a bridge or a partial denture. This is an artificial tooth that is anchored between two other teeth by way of a crown. The third is a denture which is a set of artificial teeth that are bonded to the person's gums.

Dental Implants

A dental implant is placed by either your dentist or an oral surgeon. It is a screw that fastens into your jaw much like a normal tooth root. This is also the reason that it functions the most like a normal tooth. After the implant is placed you will get an abutment and an implant crown. This restores the place that was previously missing a tooth to full function.

Crown and Bridge

A crown and bridge is one or more artificial teeth anchored to the two teeth on either side. A crown is placed on the two adjacent teeth and the missing teeth are attached in between. Typically it is wise to not attach too many teeth this way as it can put too much stress on the adjacent teeth. If you have too many missing teeth then a partial denture or a denture is a better option for you.

Dentures

Dentures are a set of teeth that are typically bonded to the gums. Dentures are the lowest cost option for multiple tooth replacement. While they are not the most ideal option, they can still look and function very nicely. There are a number of people who have dentures that you would never even notice. Sometimes we have a negative image associated with dentures because we immediately think about the mishaps that can happen with dentures. Rest assured that a good fitting denture is a great option.
